Ian & DawnMarie
I met Ian and DawnMarie when I had a photo booth at Northern Manhattan’s Medieval Festival in 2002. He remembered me and, when he decided to pop the question to DawnMarie on the Learning Channel TV show “Perfect Proposal,” he asked me play a central role. After she said yes, I photographed their beach side wedding in Cancun.

Biography

Mike Fitelson has explored the world through photography for 16 years.

Fitelson, 38, first picked up a camera with professional intent after taking several anthropology courses at the University of California at Santa Cruz. This led him on a photojournalistic course, including the last five years at Northern Manhattan’s weekly bilingual community newspaper, the Manhattan Times, where he is currently the associate publisher. His editorial work has also appeared in The New York Times, Boston Globe, Chicago Tribune, and Listín Diario, based in the Dominican Republic.

As a freelance photographer, Fitelson has been hired by corporations, organizations, and individuals for promotional, documentary, and event photography. He has expanded his photography business to include design and layout work, including annual reports.

Fitelson’s personal work, often underscored by an abstract or fantasy element, includes projects on the European Grand Tour, people’s fascination with water, the American Flag, self-portraits in New York City, and, his ongoing work, “Unseen Uptown,” documenting Northern Manhattan where he lives, and “Incident,” celebrating the compelling beauty of markings left by the accidental encounters of things.

For the past several years, Fitelson has worked with other artists to help build the arts community in Inwood and Washington Heights, helping to lay the foundation for the Northern Manhattan Arts Alliance, founded in 2007. June 2008 will feature the sixth annual Uptown Arts Stroll, which he co-founded.

Fitelson was born in Oakland, CA, and has studied photography at UC Santa Cruz, UC Extension, Columbia College Chicago, and LaGuardia Community College. He lives in Washington Heights in Northern Manhattan with his wife.
